Kidney diseases and, above all, the increasingly frequent Chronic Kidney Disease pose major challenges for modern medicine and the western world. The underlying mechanisms of most kidney diseases are poorly understood, meaning that no tailored therapies are available yet. The Department II of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Cologne combines cutting-edge clinical medicine with extremely successful international research at the Kidney Research Center Cologne. This includes our scientific nephrology research laboratory – the Nephrolab, and the clinical study center.

The Association for the Promotion of Nephrology at the University Hospital Cologne, Research Excellence in Nephrology (REN), has been founded to support the work of the Kidney Research Center. The aim is to further excellent kidney research in order to enable the development of innovative individual therapies and preventive measures based on precise knowledge of the pathogenesis of kidney diseases.
